Social Action and Interfaith Activities

The Congregation’s Interfaith Committee conducts relationships with religious congregations from faiths other than Judaism. An active part of the program is a community service component, which we pursue in partnership with the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg. We have met with and keep in regular contact with the Social Ministry group from the church congregation. We participated in food drives for poor people needing help and also contributed school supplies for children. Each year on the date of football’s Super Bowl, we take part in a nationwide effort to contribute cans of stew and soup for what is known as “the Souper Bowl.” We are prepared to join in other social action projects with the Prince of Peace Congregation as future opportunities arise.

We recently became one of approximately 170 organizations from many faiths that are affiliated with the Save Darfur organization, which lobbies the U.S. government, the United Nations, and the international community to take action on the genocide in Darfur. Hevrat Shalom’s Board of Directors made a strong resolution in opposition to the Darfur genocide and authorized affiliation with Save Darfur.

We also participate in interfaith programs of Georgetown University, which is active in this field, presenting speakers and special programs.
